What do I do if it feels like I will never feel better?

In a nutshell, have faith and trust in yourself.  Difficulties can feel permanent, and hope you can feel better can be hard to come by. In reality, everything changes all the time; change is really the only constant.

Consciousness seems at its heart to be a really sophisticated prediction model. We perceive what we expect to perceive, we project out onto the world the sum of the way we have interpreted our past experiences and our model only updates when we notice something different.

This is great for many things, for example I know how to use a door, with many varieties of how they work without having to stand and study each one. The difficulty comes when we have had repeated challenging experiences, we come to expect them to keep repeating. We can begin to see the same problems recurring again and again, and may not notice subtle differences and opportunities that could help us make something different happen.

Faith and trust are potent forces, and for me they are most impactful when we apply them to our own self. Trusting your intuition, finding ways to be open-hearted and vulnerable and asking yourself deep and challenging questions can help you find the chinks of light and the new avenues to open up to.

Having faith in your ability to find ways forward in even the most difficult circumstances can be of great help. If you have faced adversity already you will most certainly have resources to call on and strengths to deploy, even as you may not be noticing them or may feel too exhausted to use them.

Psychotherapy can be a path to gently and steadily recovering your sense of yourself in sustained adversity, bit by bit finding what you need to make the small changes that accumulate over time.
